The most recent Snapchat update from January 27th finally has something to offer. Personally, I cannot say I was too intrigued by the previous updates which included Snapchat messaging or Snapchat money transfers... all sounds a little too unnecessary and sketch for me. However, being able to swipe through the hottest news headlines, recipes, humous Comedy Central clips, and Cosmo's 101 sex tips (which are still a mystery to me since new ones are included in almost every monthly issue) is actually quite nice of a change.
Snapchat is a great indicator of the way our generation and younger generations consume information--we want what's important to right now and we want it fast. It's almost like speed dating or an audition where you have to say what's good about yourself in under 10 seconds. Snapchat specifically chose 12 different companies who they believed would have the ability to capture their audience in roughly under a minute.
Unfortunately, Snapchat only chose 12 companies of the thousands of entertainment businesses that exist. I was very happy to see CNN, Yahoo! News, Cosmopolitan, Comedy /Central, food Network, and People among the "chosen ones," but I wish I didn't have to limit myself there. I would love to see HBO on there releasing 10 second teasers of the new Game of Thrones series; or Spotify giving us snip bits of some of the hottest, yet undiscovered songs; or YouTube, E! Entertainment, etc. Snapchat could even take a stab at some good causes, perhaps an animal adoption account for example. The options are endless, do you have any ideas?
Great post! I had no idea that Snapchat offers all of this now. Most likely due to the fact that I have not downloaded the update yet, but now that I know I definitely need to. I like the idea of having news updates all on one app in a way that is instant and easily accessible. I think it would definitely gain more popularity if Snapchat offered a wider variety of companies to choose from or even a way to screen through and select the ones you want to receive information from.
ReplyDeleteI think you hit the nail on the head with the statement that our generation wants what's important and it wants it fast.Everything is so fast-paced in today's world and the digital age, and apps like Snapchat help keep up with that high demand. I think it will be interesting to see how advertisers and companies begin to utilize some of these new features and access they now have to consumers, let's just hope that Snapchat keeps a tight leash around companies and don't let them become to intrusive in their advertisements and snaps. This app was built around the idea of connecting with friends in a new innovative way, as long as Snapchat keeps that as their primary objective they shouldn't have to worry about driving away any of their current users.
ReplyDeleteI also was very excited about this new addition to Snapchat! I think the reason they chose the companies they did because like you said Snapchat is most commonly used by a younger demographic. The Comedy Central, People, Vice and Cosmopolitan sections are definitely entertaining. People even posted one article about The Bachelor that almost had me crying laughing so hard.
ReplyDeleteMy question is I wonder how much these companies are paying for this. These Snapchat stories are reaching thousands and thousands of people who use this popular app. It must be expensive coming up with new material to post every single day but I believe it is going to have a large payoff for the select companies.
